The Situation

Tempco, an ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer of custom heating elements, temperature sensors, and process heating systems, needed to automate its order processing to meet the demands of a significant customer, Grainger. 

Grainger required Tempco to comply with an EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) system, specifically through SPS commerce, which would streamline data exchange, improve accuracy, and support Tempco’s operational efficiency. 

To achieve this, Tempco engaged Mr. IIoT, a digital industry 4.0 transformation expert specializing in IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) solutions, to lead this system integration.

The Challenge

When Mr. IIoT first started working with Tempco, the company relied heavily on manual data entry for processing Grainger’s orders. 

As Tempco’s IT Manager, Jeff Griffin, notes:


“Grainger would send in about 22 to 23 orders on a Tuesday morning, and it would take a good amount of our customer service team’s time to put all of those orders into our system.” That manual process was not only time-consuming but also inefficient, with the potential for costly delays and errors.

Tempco needed a solution that would allow seamless order processing, reduce the workload on its customer service team, and ensure full compliance with Grainger’s requirements. Additionally, Tempco wanted the EDI system to handle both inbound and outbound data, such as invoices and shipment notices, without any manual intervention. 

This complex integration demanded a high degree of customization, which led Tempco to seek help from Mr. IIoT.

The Solution to The Challenge

Mr. IIoT, under the leadership of Chris Misztur, provided a customized an advanced IoT system integration solution that automated the EDI workflows between SPS and Tempco’s ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system. 

According to Tempco’s IT Manager, Jeff Griffin:

“Chris and his team did all the necessary integrated system programming to make that happen. They created an EDI portal for internal purposes that enabled us to view incoming purchase orders, shipments, invoices—all of that was created by the team at Mr. IIoT.”

The integration involved mapping data exchanges to ensure seamless communication between SPS and Tempco’s ERP system. With this solution, Granger’s orders could be received automatically and processed seven days a week, removing the need for manual order entry. 

Additionally, invoices were generated and sent back to Granger automatically after an order was completed, and the Advanced Shipping Notice (ASN) was matched accurately. Mr. Griffin highlights: “After integrating and updating our system, we’ve taken away the need for all of those orders to be entered manually by our staff and freed up a ton of time.”

The project was marked by weekly check-ins and collaborative communication between Mr. IIoT and Tempco. As Mr. Griffin explains, “From the start, we talked at least once a week to stay on top of everything. I led the project and Mr. IIoT handled the programming. I gave them the specs, told them what we wanted, and then they came in as our consultants, programmed this feature we needed, and we were done with it.”

Positive Result

Mr. IIoT’s system integration solution delivered significant operational and efficiency benefits for Tempco:

• Fully Automated Order Processing:

The new system entirely removed the need for manual order entry for Granger, allowing Tempco’s team to focus on other priorities. Mr. Griffin notes, “Currently, we now accept Grainger orders Monday through Friday—they can send in orders even on Saturday and Sunday as well.”

• Enhanced Customer Satisfaction:

With the automated system, Grainger’s orders, invoices, and shipment notices were processed accurately and promptly, fostering better communication and strengthening Tempco’s reputation. Mr. Griffin confirms the success of the project, saying, “It’s been working totally awesome. We literally don’t even pay attention to it, and if something goes wrong, Mr. IIoT has created alerts for us so we can check right off the bat.”

• Efficiency Gains:

By freeing up staff from repetitive data-entry tasks, Tempco improved operational efficiency, allowing the customer service team to dedicate time to higher-value tasks. Mr. Griffin remarks: “The communication and working with Chris and his team have been great. To this day, if we run into an issue, we’ll send Mr. IIoT an email, and within five minutes, I’ll get a response.”

• Scalability for Future Projects:

Encouraged by this success, Tempco engaged Mr. IIoT to implement a similar EDI system integration for another major customer, Zoro, demonstrating the scalability and long-term benefits of the solution. Mr. Griffin shares, “We’re working on another project with Mr. IIoT for Zoro, basically starting the system integration process all over again.”
